Building your email list

Posted in Email marketing, Mailing lists, No Comments

Writer and marketing guru Jay Abraham addressed the following question to a gathering of successful internet marketers: If your office caught fire and you could only rescue one thing before fleeing for safety, what would it be? The unanimous response was ‘My List!’ Your list, or database, is money in the bank. But how do you go about building one?

Let me count the ways: email capture, email marketing, link exchanges, link sharing, pay-per-click, e-zines, free and paid advertising, eBay, social and business networking sites, calling cards, media articles and interviews, speeches, seminars, press releases, communications with your customers, ‘take-one’ cards in shops and restaurants, newspaper ads, direct mail, joint ventures, etc. ALL of these and more work as list building methods, but…

The problem is that most beginners try a few things, get a disappointing response, and give up. They want BIG numbers – fast! The secret is to be patient and, as with all other elements of e-marketing, to test, Test, TEST and then test some more. If one method doesn’t work for you, change it. If still it doesn’t work for you, dump it!  Remember the story of the Tortoise and the Hare?  Slow and steady wins the race.

The fact is there is no single way to build an email list. Rather, it’s a cumulative, multi-stranded process, which gathers pace over time. It’s like building a snowball: it takes patience to gather those first few vital snowflakes and tempt them to coalesce, but as your snowball increases in size, the pace at which it expands increases exponentially. Your challenge as a marketer is to build your list to a point where it gathers its own momentum. Like a snowball launched down the side of a snowy mountain, it rapidly multiplies in size, and the bigger it gets the faster it grows.
