Commenting on other people’s blog posts
Commenting on other people’s blogs is a great way to increase the number of one-way inbound links to your website. More links to your website can help increased search engine rankings. Increased search engine rankings mean more visitors to your website and more profits for your business. It might seem cheeky at first, but it’s really not. It’s a win-win for both parties.
By commenting on other peoples blogs you’re increasing the blog owner’s reputation. If the blog owner has lots of comments expressing gratitude and positive remarks; their credibility increases. At the same time, the more comments you add to other blogs, the more links will point back to your website.
However, there are certain techniques when it comes to blog commenting for search engine optimisation. It’s very easy to become blocked by comment spamming which is becoming increasingly common practice these days. No-one likes a spammer so here are some top do’s and don’ts when it comes to commenting on blogs.
Do read through each blog post carefully. Understand what the topic is about and prepare your response. When commenting; try to use the blog authors’ name. Mention certain parts of the blog posts text to show you’ve actually read the blog. Your comment may be negative; such as you don’t agree with what’s been said, but have the courtesy to at least be relevant.
Don’t leave comments such as “Yeah me too”, or “nice post”. It’s not very imaginative and the blog owner is likely to remove such comments.
Do leave information in your comment that is of quality value. False information or facts, misspellings, bad grammar or even unprofessional language are likely to reflect badly on you. Comments such as this might even affect your reputation and put people off visiting your website.
Don’t try to stuff your commenter’s name with keyword rich anchor text. For example; people with names such as “amazing weight loss e-book” are clearly using the blog comments for spamming. Most blog owners will know that’s not your name and will remove your comment. It’s a waste of everyone’s time.
Do use the URL field to link back to your website. That’s what it’s there for. However, you’ll see some people repeating their URL or sometimes a different website address in the comment text area. This is fine if you’re referencing something such as a news article on a different website. But, if it’s to advertise your website; it’s classed as spamming. Just enter your URL once and in the field provided.
Don’t use mass commenting software. You’d be surprised at how many people regularly read lots of different blogs. If you’ve been commenting the same text, or even just pointless comments on a mass scale; someone will pick up on it. This may result in you getting banned from future comments.
Do enjoy yourself. Get involved in the online community. Get to know people by regularly commenting on other blogs. You’ll build respect for yourself and even make some friends in the process. If your comments are knowledgeable and of high quality, you might even pick up clients through your blog comments.

nice post. (sorry – had to do that)
Of course, and I suspect that you’ll be perfectly aware of this, even if it’s not mentioned in the post – If you’re doing this purely for SEO reasons then the impact of nofollow links need to be considered.
Using a tool to highlight follow/nofollow links help me understand the extra value I get from posting a comment (in addition to the pleasure gained from participating. Personally I just adjust my chrome in Firefox :

Although there are extensions that’ll do that anyway.
(and I’ve only broken two of your ‘rules’)
