How basic is basic for a social media newbie?
After receiving a tremendous amount of interest in our new PML training services, I’m currently putting together a social media step-by-step set-up guide for beginners, it’s a freebie to accompany our two hour social media seminar. Our next one is with a group of lovely ladies from the beauty industry. They‘re looking to broaden their business coverage through social channels and are relying on us to convey our knowledge in such a way, that after two hours they’ll be able to set-up their own accounts and have gained enough confidence to go it alone and ‘join in the conversation’. A big responsibly if I do say so myself, and one that we can’t wait to take on!
Tentatively breaking down the initial account set-up stages for Facebook and twitter, I’ve started to feel strangely nostalgic. After all – I was also twitter virgin once! And I seem to have found the whole back to basics thing quite an enjoyable task. But I’ve had one unanswered question on my mind constantly whilst putting these documents together – ‘How basic is acceptable for a beginner?’ and how does the word basic and beginner relate, in the social media world especially.
Sure, the account set-up is pretty self explanatory in a step by step sense, but even the basics go so much further beyond that. Those of us who are regular users of twitter for instance, take for granted the tips and techniques we pick up along the way and the experience and knowledge we’ve gained as a result of regular usage.
For example: #hashtags
Pretty basic to us social geeks, but to the twitter newbie – it’s a mind field!
When to use them? Why we use them? …. And so on and so forth.
So after some writing, re-writing and then extra re-tweaking, I feel I’ve come up with the perfect support documents to give the girls the best start possible. Just the right amount of set-up details, principles and usage techniques, all rolled into an easy to follow guide to support the session.
And the best thing about putting this together, is that there is something extremely rewarding in sharing knowledge and helping others achieve their goals.
And we hope to do a lot more!
