Information Marketing & How It Works

Posted in Digital Marketing, Personal Branding, Web2.0, No Comments

Information marketing involves establishing yourself or your business as an expert in your field. We’re all knowledge hungry people and we respect ‘experts’ that give away this knowledge and information for free. Information marketing can be used to gain new buyers and increase your businesses profits.

It might not immediately seem like giving away information for free will help to increase your businesses profits. However, if done properly, it can be very effective. For example; if you’ve started a new hobby of rock-climbing you’ll need to know how to get started. You probably won’t want to spend too much money so you’ll look around for free information on the subject.

Once you’ve found a reliable and good quality source of information you’ll more than likely return to reference the material. The information being provided could be from a company that specialises in rick-climbing equipment and training. Once you’ve learned the basics and you’re enjoying it, you might want to invest in some training and equipment.

By giving away free information; the company in this example has proved themselves to be reliable and trustworthy. The result is a sale from a new buyer that has an interest in the field and requires an experts help.

The same technique can be applied to any business. Provide the newbie’s with education and training materials on a subject they’re unfamiliar with, and they’re likely to see you as the expert. People want to learn from expects, and if you’re seen as the ‘guru’ in your field, you’ll get more buyers.

So, How Does Information Marketing Work?

The easiest way would be through an e-book that you give away. Don’t just fill the e-book with basic information on the subject matter. You need to prove to the reader that you’re knowledgeable and an expert. You don’t have to give away all the secrets of the subject area, but teach the reader something new.

By creating a free e-book that’s full of information you’ll also create demand with it. Give the e-book away via an opt-in page; i.e. only allow people to download the e-book if they provide their name and email address. You can then send even more valuable knowledge to them direct to their inbox. After a relationship has built between you and the ‘student’ you can approach them for a sale.

Chances are if you’ve worked hard to teach people about a subject they’re unfamiliar with, they’ll appreciate this. If you then remain in regular communication with them you’ll start to form a relationship. If you receive lots of questions via email; you’ve become the expert.

At this stage you won’t even need to deliver a hard sales pitch. If you subtly advertise your products and services in your email footers, people who respect you will follow the links. Before you know it, and without even drilling a sales pitch, you’re gaining new clients and buyers.

So, by giving away free information, you can set yourself as an expert to your prospects. If all your material is high quality and knowledgeable, you’ll easily increase your businesses profits.
